From the lush hills of Gakenke District, Rwanda, this Fairtrade and Organic-certified Bourbon coffee is more than just a premium cup—it is a symbol of unity, resilience, and empowerment. Cultivated at 1,760 meters above sea level in nutrient-rich clay soil, this coffee is carefully handpicked and meticulously washed at the Abakundakawa Washing Station, a cooperative founded in 1999. The name Abakundakawa translates to "those who love coffee", a fitting tribute to the dedication of the farmers who produce it.
A Coffee That Transforms Lives
In 2006, Abakundakawa established Hingakawa, a women-led group designed to bring together those whose husbands were either victims or perpetrators of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Through coffee farming, these women have built a community rooted in reconciliation and progress. What began with 68 members has now grown to 916 women, representing 814 families.
Early on, the women aimed to process their own coffee separately from the men to enhance quality and gain international recognition. Their vision has paid off, with Hingakawa now recognized as a producer of exceptional specialty coffee worldwide.
